CALLING

“Each of us has a small slice of God’s heart.”

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  —Ephesians 2:10

Have you ever wondered what you’re really meant to do with your life? That longing—the desire to live with purpose—isn’t random. It’s sacred. It’s part of how you and I were made. God created each of us on purpose and for a purpose. We don’t have to wander aimlessly or chase after someone else’s idea of success. Often, our calling is already embedded in our tears and our laughter.

Ask yourself these two questions: What makes you cry? What makes you laugh with joy?

These are clues. The things that stir you deeply—the injustices that break your heart, the victories that fill you with joy—are not accidents. They are signposts pointing to your God-given calling.

One of my favorite authors, Frederick Buechner, said it beautifully: “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

That’s the sweet spot. God has entrusted each of us with a fragment of His heart. He allows certain needs to wreck us emotionally, and certain redemptions to thrill us, because He’s calling us to be a part of His great reconciliation project.

Your calling is not just about what career you choose or where you live—it’s about what you can’t ignore. It’s the thing you’d do even if no one paid you. It’s the ache you feel when the world isn’t as it should be, and the joy you feel when you help make it right.

Take a few moments today and reflect on these questions:

What situations or stories consistently break your heart?

When have you felt most alive, most fulfilled?

What burdens or joys have stayed with you over the years?

These aren’t just emotions. They’re invitations. How glorious is that?

Prayer:
Father, thank You for creating me with purpose and placing a piece of Your heart in mine. Help me to pay attention to the tears I cry and the joy I feel, and to recognize them as signposts of my calling. Give me the courage to follow where You lead, to be part of Your redeeming work in the world. Amen.
