All you need is love. All you need is love. All you need is love. Love is all you need. Great song. Who doesn’t like The Beatles? But let’s be honest—the song is nonsense. Any couple celebrating their golden anniversary will tell you that. The “love-is-all-you-need” philosophy is a lie, and like any lie, it has caused a great deal of damage. Of course, love is essential in a relationship. But love alone isn’t enough. A strong and lasting relationship doesn’t just happen. Contrary to what movies and novels would have you believe, it takes commitment, hard work, communication, negotiation, and sacrifice to make a relationship thrive. But those things don’t exactly sell greeting cards, do they? And doesn’t it stand to reason that if two people can “fall in love,” they can also “fall out of love”? However, if two people commit to love, they will find a way to stay in love.
