Valuable Lesson

In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches a profound lesson about the relationship between charity and justice. The charitable act in this story is not a mere handout, and the hero is a compassionate, caring individual—not a faceless, impersonal entity like a policy or program. The Samaritan’s actions represent a genuine investment in another person, someone from a different ethnic and religious background. This act required a sacrifice of time, resources, and reputation, and it involved a certain level of risk—as all acts of true help often do. Jesus does not criticize the Samaritan for reasons that might align with modern objections raised by some social justice advocates. If the Samaritan had simply lobbied for stronger laws against crime or advocated for more equitable social and economic policies, he would have been as morally indifferent as the religious leaders who passed by the injured man without offering aid. True social justice begins with personal charity and culminates in collective responsibility.
