Like a Real Father

I find it heartbreaking that so many children today must use a variety of qualifying adjectives to describe the men who serve as father figures in their lives. There are the official titles: stepfathers, foster fathers, adoptive fathers, and biological fathers (often referred to as real or birth fathers).

But for many kids, even those labels don’t quite fit. They have to get creative when speaking about the men who unofficially step into that role. They might say, “He’s like my real father,” or introduce him with, “He’s been like a father figure to me.” These phrases reflect an attempt to define something that words sometimes fail to capture—a deep and meaningful relationship that may not fit neatly into a title but is profoundly felt just the same.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful for every kind of father—official or unofficial—who steps up and stands in the gap. I praise God for men who become fathers to the fatherless, who embrace the role of dad for those in need of one. While it may not always be the ideal, it’s infinitely better than a child growing up without a father figure at all. In fact, I am convinced that choosing to be a father—whether by birth, by circumstance, or by choice—is one of the greatest acts of human kindness. The Bible calls it pure and undefiled religion.

In the end, it’s not about the title a man carries but the love he gives that truly matters. A father can be a stepdad, a foster dad, an adoptive dad, or even a spiritual dad—what’s important is that someone serves in the role and fulfills the function of a father. A man doesn’t have to be a biological father to be a real dad. In fact, he may be far superior.

Because at the heart of fatherhood, it’s not DNA that makes the difference—it’s the depth of love and the time invested that truly define what it means to be a dad.
