Grief Agreement

C.S. Lewis married his wife Joy while she lay in her hospital bed, what they both thought would be her deathbed. However, she experienced a remarkable remission and they had some time together as a couple. Lewis said that the three years of his marriage to Joy were the happiest of his life. The grief he felt after her passing was so deep because of the happiness they had experienced together with her. According to Lewis, “marriage is an agreement to grieve.” One day we’ll all pass away. It may be tomorrow, or it may be fifty years from now. We don’t know when, and that’s the point. Live in marriage like you might die tomorrow.
