There’s big money in addressing social problems these days, and “helping” troubled and needy children has become one of the most lucrative. Endless government subsidies have inadvertently created a massive child welfare industrial complex. Many who claim to serve vulnerable children seem more focused on chasing funding than fulfilling their mission, often contorting their programs to secure the next government subsidy. Raising children isn’t easy—but it’s not as complicated as we’ve been led to believe. Somehow, we’ve been sold the idea that meeting children’s needs is so complex that it must be left to experts, government authorities, and activist educators who view children as a means to an end. Nothing can be further from the truth.
