The Vow

I love my wife. When I say “my wife, it’s not the same as saying “my car” or “my house.” It’s not even the same as saying “my life.” She’s not my possession. My wife is not some object I may love one minute and curse the next. My love for her is not some fleeting feeling. She’s my wife because I’m her husband. The symbiotic relationship is not equal to any kind of object or person on earth. The kind of love my wife and I share is fully realized in the words of the wedding vow: “To love and to cherish, in sickness or in health and forsaking all others, to cleave to one another for as long as we both shall live.” This vow speaks of a dedication to one another that’s found only in marriage. It’s a commitment to love always. We will love each other when we are at our best. We will love each other when we are at our worst.
