English poet and cultural critic Matthew Arnold defined hypocrisy as, “vice paying tribute to virtue.” In other words, when we sin and fall short of the glory of God – and His virtues – we are called hypocrites, and rightly so. Our immortality is a recognition, at least, that we believe in morality. Without knowledge of the law there is no sin. My fear is there’s coming a time in our culture when tribute is no longer paid, because we’ll no longer have any virtues. There’s a huge difference between the lack of virtue, and the lack of the knowledge of virtue. We’re quickly getting to a place where there are no more standards, no more principles, no absolutes in which people put their faith.
