What’s the purpose of life? It’s a question as profound as it is common. To put it in a uniquely American vernacular, what is the business of life? Well, let’s first establish what it’s not. As much as our society centers on it, the business of life is not business. It’s not even about meaningful work, although work is meaningful and essential to a good life. The business of life is not teaching, although education is important. Nor is it serving others, even though I believe service is the secret to joy. The business of life isn’t even parenting, without which the world would quickly descend into the chaos of unruly children. I believe the business of life – the purpose of our existence – is all about becoming a complete human being. The business of life is to pursue the purpose of our creation, and to be conformed to the image of the one who gave us life.
