Like many people, I have found myself unemployed on occasion. The last time was due to the Great Recession. Millions of us lost our jobs back then. I loved my job. I loved what I was doing, and I loved the organization that employed me. So, you can imagine my great disappointment when I was told I would be one of many being laid off. Disappointment quickly turned to depression as I tried to make sense of what happened. A wise person told me, “You can love your job, but your job can never love you back.” Isn’t that the truth? Our jobs can provide income. They can give us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Our jobs can even be opportunities for personal growth. However, our jobs can never love us. Let us be sure then, we don’t lose sight of those who do love us back.
